Best Cribs for Baby – A Wide Assortment

The most important piece of furniture that every nursery needs is a crib. It is essentially the only piece of furniture that a nursery cannot go without. With so many styles and features to choose from when it comes to choosing a crib how do you pick which are the best cribs for baby?

Convertible Cribs

Convertible cribs are the most common type of crib you will find these days. What is a convertible crib? It is a crib that will grow with your child through the different stages of their life. Convertible cribs vary in the different stages they offer.

There are 3-in-1 cribs that go through all the little stages with them. They start out as a crib for the infant stage. When they get a little bigger and can move around pretty good and get up and down using furniture it can be converted to a toddler bed. The toddler bed consists of taking off the front panel of the crib and replacing it with a half rail to keep them from falling out of the bed until they get used to the open side. It then transitions to a day bed which is just removing the half rail from the toddler bed so the one side is completely open.

The 4-in-1 cribs have all the same stages as the 3-in-1 cribs. The difference is they have a fourth stage that turns it into a full size bed after they outgrow the crib sized mattress. Basically, the back panel of the crib would become a headboard (and some models the front panel a foot board) for a full size bed frame.

Should you choose to go with a 4-in-1 mini crib the stages are the same except the final stage would be a twin size bed rather than a full size bed. I’ll get into more about mini cribs shortly.

There are many more convertible cribs that list different stages they can provide (I’ve seen up to 7-in-1) but I won’t go into full detail about each one as they all mostly end up at the same place and the 4-in-1 is really all you need to get the full function of a convertible crib.

Convertible cribs are a great concept in that you essentially wouldn’t have to buy them new bedroom furniture for the entire span of their life at home. One thing to consider when purchasing a convertible crib is the accessories that are needed for the conversions. These items are usually sold separately. I highly suggest purchasing these extra items at the same time you purchase the crib because there are always new cribs coming to the market. By the time you may be ready to purchase the accessories your crib could have been discontinued and the parts may no longer be available.

The last thing I want to bring to your attention if you plan to utilize the conversions for your convertible crib is quality. While these cribs can in theory last till your little babies grow up and move out after taking it apart and moving stuff around several times throughout the years if you don’t get a good sturdy quality one to start with it may not last through all the transitions.

Mini Cribs

Mini cribs are described perfectly right in their name. They are cribs that are smaller than standard sized cribs by around 35%. This makes them great for small nurseries that don’t have a lot of space for furniture. Downsizing the crib could help you squeeze other useful furniture into a small nursery like a glider with ottoman.

Mini cribs can have other useful features that might bump them up your list. Apart from being small and therefore lightweight some mini cribs fold up for easy storage of transportation, have wheels for easy relocation, and some even come with mattresses.

The feature of folding up can prove useful in many situations. It can allow you to get it in a car to transport to the grandparents or babysitters house for a night or two. It could also make storage easy if you plan to have more children after they outgrow it.

A mini crib with wheels could prove useful to move around the house. A lot of new parents like to have the baby in the room with them for the first couple weeks or months. With its wheels and small size (to squeeze through doorways) you could get the baby used to sleeping in their actual bed (instead of a temporary bassinet) but still have them in your room until you are ready comfortable putting them in their own room. This would leave them in a bed they are familiar with but wouldn’t be a huge hassle to get it from your room to theirs when the time comes.

There are mini cribs that can be purchased with a mattress. These mattresses are usually pretty thin (2″ or less). Mini cribs often require thinner mattresses for safety reasons. Make sure to read the safety information for your crib to determine how thick of a mattress can safely be used for your crib if you decide to go with a mini crib.

Portable Cribs

Portable cribs are cribs that can be easily moved around the house, outside, or can be transported to another location with much more ease than a traditional crib.

Many mini cribs could fall into this category as well with features like being small, having wheels, and folding up. All of those things make them very portable.

A second type of portable crib is the pack ‘n’ play. These can fold up into an easy to carry case and can come with many upgrade options like an added changing table, detachable napper, a mobile, and two levels for them to sleep at as they grow.

The pack ‘n’ play cribs may not be something you want to use as the official nursery crib but it is still an excellent option to have.

These types of cribs can allow the baby to sleep in your home office while you work, or outside while you garden or have other kids playing, or in the kitchen while you are cooking or cleaning. They can also be good for temporary setups at other places like the park or at a sitters house when you have to be away.

Crib and Changing Table Combos

Who wouldn’t like to cut down the number of furniture pieces they have to buy for their nursery? With a crib and changing table combo you get two pieces of furniture in one. These cribs have a smaller version of a changing table built onto one end of the crib and provides extra storage beneath in the form of shelves, drawers, or both.

For those that love the style and convenience of this type of crib there is one thing to keep in mind. These cribs are much larger than other cribs in their overall size (mattress is still the standard size). You will need to decide before purchasing where you want to place the crib in the room as you may not have enough wall space to change your mind later with a crib this large. Measure the spot you want it to go to make sure it will fit and see if you can find an alternative spot it might fit in case you do decide to rearrange later.

I personally think the cribs with attached changing tables look lovely and have a bit of class to them. There are, however, pros and cons to these types of cribs that you should consider before deciding this type of crib is the one for your nursery. You can check out my list of pros and cons versus other changing table types here.

Don’t Forget the Mattress

I hope these options have given you a pretty good idea for the kind of crib you would like in your nursery. Maybe even one of these cribs could be “the one”. Also, I would like to mention not all cribs come with mattresses. There are many options for standard size and mini mattresses but not every mattress will go with every crib. Please carefully read the safety information for your crib to determine the right mattress for your crib. Good luck on finding a beautiful crib for your nursery!
